Occupied since the Bronze Age, it's surrounded by a 1700m-long wall. There's plenty to see, but the Citadel's most striking sights are the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace. Artifacts dating from the Bronze Age show that the hill was a fortress and/or agora (open space for commerce and politics) for thousands of years. The two giant standing pillars are the remains of the Roman Temple of Hercules. The temple was built during the reign of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 161–80).
  • TThen drive to visit the region of Madaba has been inhabited for around 4500 years and is said to be one of the towns divided among the 12 tribes of Israel at the time of the Exodus. The region passed from the Ammonites to the Israelites, the Nabataeans, and eventually, by AD 106, the Romans, under whom Madaba became a prosperous provincial town with colonnaded streets and impressive public buildings. The prosperity continued during the Christian Byzantine period, with the construction of churches and the lavish mosaics that decorated them.
  • Then drive to visit Mt. Nebo where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land, a land he was himself forbidden to enter. It's believed that he died aged 120 and was later buried in the area, although the exact location of the burial site is the subject of conjecture. The Mt Nebo region features several rocky outcrops, including Siyagha (the local name of the site, meaning ‘monastery’). The Moses Memorial Church is perched on the summit, commanding sweeping views of the Dead Sea and Israel and the Palestinian Territories beyond. A pleasant side trip from Madaba, just 9km away, the church with its magnificent mosaics is the centerpiece of a small hilltop complex, signposted from the Madaba–Dead Sea Road, Then transfer to the hotel at Petra for dinner and overnight.

The city remained hidden and empty for almost two centuries until Swiss explorer John Lewis Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812.
